Jean Taylor

Jean Taylor, whose Tlingit name is Khàsx’ ân Tlâ, is from the Dakhł awèdi Clan of the Teslin Tlingit Nation in Teslin, Yukon Territory. She is also a member of the Tlingit Haida Central Council of Alaska.

Jean has traveled to Grande Prairie, Campbell River, Comox, Victoria, Phoenix, AZ (with Kim English)and Bucerias, Mexico to train one on one with painters she admired. Throughout this journey she studied a variety of media with selected mentors and settled on acrylic and pastel as her favorites. She has a passion for painting people of her culture in regalia dancing and celebrating life. Another favorite subject is painting Yukon scenery near her home town of Teslin.

- 2005 - Third place in the Peace Hills Trust National Art Competition
- 2007 - Two paintings; were presented as gifts to Governor General of Canada

- 2007 - Received the Peoples’ Choice Award and the Artists’ Choice Award for her paintings at the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, N.W.T.
- 2008 - Showed at 50th Annual Heard Museum Indian Art Festival in Phoenix, at 3rd Annual Canadian First Nations and Inuit Art Festival in Annecy, France and was part of a group exhibition for the Indigenous Exhibit at the United Nations in New York
- 2008 - Showed at the 3rd Annual Canadian First Nation and Inuit Art Festival in Annecy, France
- 2008 - Peoples’Choice and Mentorship Award at the Yukon First Nations Art Festival in Whitehorse, YT

In January of 2009, she held solo exhibitions entitled “Best Foot Forward” at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery; Eagle Feather Gallery, Victoria; and North Peace Art Gallery in Fort St. John.

Coming in 2009, Jean has been juried into the Western Showcase at the Calgary Stampede and has been invited to show work at the Biennale Chianciano in Italy. In June, she will show at the Second Annual Yukon Indian Art Festival in Whitehorse and in August will have a solo exhibition at the Copper Moon Gallery in Whitehorse, Yukon.
