Larry DuGuay

I have lived in Whitehorse, Yukon for 19 years since I relocated from
Manitoba in 1991. I opened Ptarmigan Pottery in 1995.

I have been making pots for over 15 years and for 2.5 years as a full-time
potter.  I work almost exclusively on the wheel, using white stoneware and
porcelain clay, as well as colored clays and slips. I work in the ‘high-fire’
range to produce harder and more durable work. As a ‘maker’ my goal is
produce pots that are functionally strong from a design perspective, with
attractive forms and surface decoration. I apply glaze through a variety of
techniques, including dipping, pouring, spraying and ‘brushing’ - often
applying six or more glazes on each piece. I enjoy using altering techniques
while the form is still soft to create added interest in the object.

My greatest reward as a potter are spending time in the studio transforming
a lump of clay into a useful and attractive object and seeing the pleasure
that this can bring to others. It is very satisfying to be able to
contribute to other’s enjoyment in such a positive way, while doing
something that I love.

In addition to making one-of-a-kind art pieces, I make a full range of
functional pottery, including: teapots, large storage crocks (for bread,
flour, etc.), ginger jars, cups, mugs, plates, bowls, platters, large and
small vases, ceramic (keepsake) boxes, candle holders and much more. I also
enjoy experimenting with new forms, glazes and surface treatments. This
keeps me motivated and challenged, while hopefully, keeping my clients
interested in the work.

I have been fortunate to spend time and learn technique from a number of
great Canadian and North American potters who continue to inspire and
influence my work; special thanks to Robin Hopper, Les Manning, Randy
Brodnax, Patrick Horsley, Steven Hill and Tom Colemen.
