Mark Preston (Tenna `Tsa `Teh)

Mark was born in Dawson City, Yukon and is of Tlingit and Irish ancestry. He presently travels extensively into British Columbia and the Yukon to market his work.

He first learned about his Tlingit ancestry through school and through his family.  His first lessons came from studying the European masters such as :Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, however he discovered other masters, First Nations artist Bill Reid, Robert Davidson, Roy Vickers and Charles Edenshaw.

Mark began studying precious metal carving under the Master Jeweler Phil Janze`, while attending the famed West Coast Native Carving School “Kasan” in Hazelton, B.C. instructed by Eugene Alfred.

After his training, Mark returned to the Yukon to work and open a gallery/gift shop with his mother, Kay-Yee-Yah an artist in her own right.  Between the two of them they produced a line of clothing beautifully applique`d of cloth and beading.  Through their art they have developed a strong friendship.

Their work can be found nationally and internationally.

About his art, Mark states:“when I think about what art is, it is more than illustration or objects to be doted over.  Art is magic, the glue that binds and brings us together.  It is the language that transcends forms   Art gives us reason to think, ponder and speak out minds.”
